Committee establishes work programme to address food security, reviews farm policies

WTO members established a new work programme in the Committee on Agriculture to address food security concerns of least-developed countries (LDCs) and net food-importing developing countries (NFIDCs) at a meeting on 21-22 November, marking an important step in putting into effect a mandate in the MC12 Ministerial Declaration on the Emergency Response to Food Insecurity. The chair, Marcel Vernooij, was appointed as coordinator to facilitate discussions under the initiative in his personal capacity. He welcomed members’ efforts to approve the programme and laid out steps to launch work in December.
