Farm talks restart with positive momentum, focus on food security

At a meeting of the Committee on Agriculture in Special Session — the Committee’s negotiation arm — on 27 February, the recently elected chair, Ambassador Alparslan Acarsoy of Türkiye, said his extensive consultations revealed members’ strong commitment to achieving an outcome with a focus on food security at the 13th Ministerial Conference (MC13) slated for February 2024. He highlighted the importance of adopting a new mindset as negotiations resumed and said he planned to convene a series of seminars at end-March to gain a better understanding of the issues under negotiation.

Applications now open for WTO Training Course on Trade and Gender

The WTO will hold an in-person training course on trade and gender for government officials from 2 to 5 May 2023 at its headquarters in Geneva. The course aims to help government officials develop trade policies that promote gender equality and integrate gender considerations in their work. It supports the work of the Informal Working Group on Trade and Gender on seeking to increase women’s participation in global trade. The deadline to submit applications is 15 March 2023.

DDG Ellard calls for strengthening global ocean governance at World Ocean Summit

At the World Ocean Summit on 28 February, Deputy Director-General Angela Ellard stressed the need for WTO members to take action to enter into force the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies and to complete the second wave of negotiations aimed at addressing subsidies contributing to overcapacity and overfishing. She spoke on a panel titled “Steering national and international ocean governance to minimize anthropogenic impact on the ocean’s resources” at the summit organized by The Economist in Lisbon, Portugal.

EU gives EUR 450,000 to help developing countries strengthen trading know-how

The European Union has contributed EUR 450,000 (just over CHF 445,000) in 2023 to fund the participation of government officials from developing countries and least-developed countries (LDCs) in training and other trade capacity-building activities delivered by the WTO. This contribution to the WTO’s Global Trust Fund will help these countries better understand and implement WTO agreements and enhance their negotiating skills.

WTO and Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie bolster trade capacity-building work

The WTO and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) signed today (27 February) a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen cooperation on enhancing the participation of Francophone countries in the multilateral trading system. The MoU was signed by WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and OIF Secretary-General Louise Mushikiwabo.
