Advanced global workshop on Government Procurement Agreement concludes

Close to 130 government officials from 45 WTO members and observers improved their expertise on various aspects of the plurilateral Agreement on Government Procurement (GPA) at the 2021 Advanced Global e-Workshop on the GPA held virtually from 25 October to 26 November 2021. Improving the efficiency of government procurement markets and creating open, fair and transparent conditions of competition in government procurement were among the topics discussed by the participants.

USDA Announces Agricultural Outlook Forum Theme and Program

WASHINGTON, Nov. 30, 2021 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced the theme and program of the 98th Agricultural Outlook Forum, a virtual event that will be held on February 24-25, 2022. The 2022 Forum theme is “New Paths to Sustainability and Productivity Growth” and the program will focus on innovations to minimize the environmental footprint of agriculture and ensure sustainability while improving crop yields.

WTO members support maintaining momentum of discussions on common IP COVID-19 response

At a formal meeting of the Council for Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) on 29 November, members expressed unanimous support for maintaining the momentum of the discussions on a common intellectual property (IP) response to COVID-19. Following the decision to postpone the 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12) amid new coronavirus variant concerns, delegations committed to continue engaging in various configurations in the coming weeks to try and harvest any outcome that may still be possible.

Agriculture negotiators discuss revised draft text

At a meeting of the Committee on Agriculture in Special Session on 25 November, WTO negotiators discussed the revised draft negotiating text circulated on 23 November by the chair, Ambassador Gloria Abraham Peralta (Costa Rica). The objective of the meeting, the chair underlined, was to hear delegates’ views on the new text ahead of the 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12). The conference was originally scheduled to begin on 30 November but has now been postponed due to the latest COVID-19 developments.

Members review requests for panels on Russian procurement measures, Dominican duties

WTO members considered two requests for dispute panels at a meeting of the Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) on 29 November. The European Union requested a panel to examine Russian measures affecting EU access to commercial procurement by state-related entities, while Costa Rica requested a panel to review the Dominican Republic’s anti-dumping duties on corrugated steel bars from Costa Rica.
